The other day while at work, I asked a gentlemen if he would like more coffee. While pouring him coffee, we began talking. He asked me a few questions about my background. Many people do because my name. “Fatima, that’s a pretty name. Where are you from?” I get that a lot. So after hearing I…

It’s a nice story. Very touching.

However, I think this gives a really wrong idea about Muslims. I actually think it’s very stereotypical, because it depicts Muslim men as “abusive, strict, and blah” The usual stupid stereotypes. Islam doesn’t encourage any of the above, but that’s not mentioned in the story. The writer forgot to emphasize the fact that culture plays a BIG role in this story.

I also assume that the writer is Shiite?Idk. Because I just didn’t understand some stuff, and certain terms. But whatever, that’s not my point.

Muslim men come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities, just like all other men on this planet. Islam doesn’t=culture. That’s not brand new information.

I felt like I needed to comment on this because I’ve gotten a couple of questions about this.

Actually sister, there’s a difference between someone saying,

“All muslim men are mean, strict and awful!”

And a person saying,

“I married a Muslim man and he happened to be mean to me, strict and awful.”

Also, if you didn’t notice I addressed the fact, time and again that not all Muslim nor all Afghan men are this way. You should try reading something in it’s entirity before making such a statement.

This isn’t a story I made up, it’s what I went through. You can’t belittle what I went through because it makes you feel uncomfortable. I’m sorry but this is reality. If some of the men or women in our Ummah are acting a certain way then maybe we should address the issue rather than ignore or deny it.

Also this story isn’t a shia or sunni story, it’s a story about what somebody went through. Way to create a division for no real reason.
